Winters Performance Products was started by Vaughn Winter Sr., and his wife Madeline in 1958 as Winters Transmissions. Family lore actually says the business started as early as 1953 when Vaughn was in the Air Force, stationed in Wyoming.
Much to Madeline's resentment, but with her unfailing support, Vaughn borrowed 0 and began doing performance work to transmissions on the kitchen table of their Upon his discharge from the Air Force, the couple moved back to their home town of York, Pennsylvania, where Vaughn continued to work with converters and performance racing parts for transmissions and drivelines.
Soon after, Winters developed their aluminum, closed tube, quick change rear, which was patterned after Ford ® truck rear ends of the late 1930's.
In 1982 Winters developed their first open tube, or "live axle" sprint car rear. This rear was a substantial upgrade from the well known Halibrand ® which used ball bearings in the side bells. These ball bearings needed to be changed often. The Winters rear used tapered roller bearings that could handle the side loads put on the rear which in turn extended their life tremendously.
Over the past 26 years, Winters has continued to create innovative developments to the sprint car rear such as the aluminum axle, internal coupler, caliper mount side bells and their new eight inch quick change, the V8 Pro Sprint, the first major change in sprint car rears in nearly 60 years.
Today, Winters builds products for the entire racing industry, their products can be found in Nascar ® Sprint ® Cup Cars, Dirt and Pavement Modifieds and Late Models, Bonneville Land Speed Trial Cars, Pulling Tractors, Pike's Peak Hill Climbers, Off Shore Boats, Dragsters, Midget and Dwarf Cars, and 305, 360, and 410 Outlaw Sprint Cars.
